I firmly believe Might and Magic: World of Xeen in the GOAT. But I also love Gothic 2: NOTR, Deus Ex, and Planescape: Torment. Diablo 1, while not a true "RPG," is a guilty pleasure.

Need to play:

Arcanum

Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines

Baldur's Gate 2

Fallout 2

What are your favorites?

It sucks as an rpg but fun to explore the world which is very immersive.

That's exactly the kind of thing I'm after. I've enjoyed the exploration aspects of Divine Divinity, which I've read has a similar vibe on the exploration front.

The game present a more complete world and allows more interaction than many modern "open world" rpgs.

Also need to play:

Ultima Underworld

Arx Fatalis

Loved Grimrock and Grimrock 2, even though those are newer, but with an "old school" aesthetic

By that standard you could say xo is an RPG where you play the role of an autistic azn lolyer trying to maximize blank bumps.

Arcanum is great: Well written, mostly about story and the world experience. I had more fun with the go to powerful character build and exploring the world than I did trying to become a tech master. The combat is meh.

Fallout2 is great, fun, tons to do. starts out a bit rough but you can become over powered pretty quick if you know what you're doing. more campy than the first fall out, storywise, but way more stuff to do.

Bloodlines is great. good story, good world, 2000s goth aesthetic is awesome, combat is actually fun and you can sneak and do diplomatic shit too. each vampire race is pretty unique iirc. its been a while since i played

Fallout1 has a more atmospheric story but at some significant user experience costs, some are fixed in modding but the companion AI is dumb as shit and inventory management is burdensome.

Ultima7, like animeboi said is a great world to explore but the combat is ass. definitely use Exult or something to play it.

I never got into BG or any of those AD&D games.

Morrowind may be a bit too modern for "classic" but its good too. You can get mods to pretty it up and the world is huge. Lots to do.

goto rpgcodex and read what they have to say, plenty of spergs there too

ty this is helpful. I enjoyed fallout 1 but it didn't really "stick with me" like some of the better RPGs I've played.

But it seems like the more I play good old RPGs the more I regret plowing 100s of hours into total shit games like Skyrim

favorites are planescape torment and gothic 1, but vampire the masquerade is very good. i enjoyed arx fatalis when i was in high school, but it might be too impaired in terms of controls and graphics to be fun now.

only because of all the crap they added later, like "uber bosses" and other shitlibbery, and the lack of real end game content other than PVP

I played through it the old fashioned way to 100% completion with a buddy of mine and it was 180 as fuck

Just finished Risen. Would highly recommend to anyone who enjoyed Gothic 1/2. Endgame sucks but that's normal for PB games. First two acts are basically Gothic remastered which is 180.
