I had a big bundle of spinach with my lunch today. Got almost all of my recommended servings of vegetables just from that. It cost me 99 cents at the grocery store. I also ate a carton of strawberries, technically two days' worth of fruits. I got that for $3. And obviously there are many other fruits and vegetables available in great quantities for similar prices.

When fats talk about eating junk food, many say that they just can't afford healthy food. Is there anything to this? It sounds like complete flame. If anything, junk food seems more expensive.

eating healthy for most people really just means eating way less. this is very different than the popular conception of eating healthy.

most people aren't suffering some kinda nutritional deficit. they are flooding their body with more food than it can handle. they are eating too much food, period. the healthiest thing for them to do is start creating a caloric deficit every day. the positive health impacts will be immediate and lasting.

people waste so much cash on "health foods" and shitty $10 panera salads when they'd have a better health outcome *compared to their current diet* if they ate 1500-1800 calories of mcdonald's cheeseburgers and a multivitamin every day and that's it.

all calories are the same in that if you create a 500 calorie daily deficit eating salads and fruit and if you create a 500 calorie deficit with cheeseburgers and pizza, you will lose 1 pound a week.

this is inarguable. you do not need to follow a special diet to lose weight. i know this both scientifically and from personal anecdote and experience.

some people will say if you follow a certain diet it can be easier to lose weight, that some foods are more satiating, etc. that may be the case. i think it's not really well-known and there's lots of conflicting data and info (e.g. i find oatmeal very satiating, but some people say its bad for weight loss cuz its sugary.)

That's true to an extent but i don't believe it's true unequivocally. If you are creating a 500 calorie deficit eating mostly simple carbs and sugar, versus a 500 calorie deficit with mostly lean protein, there are going to be different results, not only in body weight, but muscle mass and fat distribution and in metabolic functions.

is there a study where they took sedentary people, put them in groups of high carb/high sugar diet, high fat protein diet, and lean protein diet, but identical calories, and there were significant differences in total weight loss over a substantial period of time (like tracking over 6 months at least)?

or one where they put high fat protein and lean protein people on identical calorie intakes and exercise routines, where there was a significant difference in weight loss over a substantial period of time?

I think there's been something like that; but I don't recall specifics and I'm not going to look it up. But a lot of this is intuitive based on what we know of sugar's effect on the body versus lean protein, for example. I'm not saying you are necessarily wrong, but I would be surprised in the long run if the effects on weight loss were the same.

but it is not "broscience" to observe that those who pursue a high carb and high sugar diet face almost insurmountable mental and psychological challenges when losing weight

I successfully cut eating TONS of calories of sugar. I'm talking like well over 3000 calories/wk of nerds, sour patch kids, and other sour candy. I eat plenty of "meals" that are just Optimum Nutrition Whey + candy to keep macros and calories under control. Whether I could do better eating real food is up for debate, but I'm 5'11 173 and repping 240 on the bench so it's not like I'm a skinnyfat pussy.

I agree completely with your first two paragraphs.

However, avoiding sugar and grains (and alcohol, if applicable) is, for most people, HIGHLY LIKELY to help them create that 500 calorie deficit. Oatmeal is a "good grain" which makes it a tough case. I eat it and do well with it.

If you're on a bulking cycle and eating correctly, yeah, it can be get pretty expensive. That only applies to a very small subset of individuals, though.

Normal people swapping out the cheetos for nuts, fast food for meat & cheese, and not gorging themselves all day on snacks will probably spend less on food overall.

plenty of healthy food tastes good once you un-brainwash your tongue

try this: put a block of sugar on your tongue, wait for it to dissolve, now go drink a soft drink: you're going to taste salt and not much else bc the sugar fucked up your taste sensation

Enh. There are places in NY where the only close options are delis. You have to trek to get the food, trek more to get the food cheaply, come back every 2-3 days because there's no way you have room to store it in your half size fridge, let alone bringing back the suv full of groceries you can in the suburbs on public transportation by yourself.

then cooking it all. it's expensive in more ways than money. and it's also much less satisfying. sure, you could survive on 1500 calories of health food, but it probably doesn't taste very good. and if you're poor and fat, tasty food is about the only luxury you have.

so you spend less money maybe, depending on your specific case, but pay way more in time, and get much less in terms of satisfaction. it's really not surprising why people don't do this. especially the working poor who have neither the time nor the luxury to prioritize something that makes the miserable, and that statistically, is over 95% likely to fail in the longterm.

Beyond flame unless you amortize the cost of a decent enough upbrining to allow someone to exercise common sense. Groceries are cheap as hell.

checkers 4-for-$3, twice daily is roughly a thousand dollars a year in total for food and drink. good luck finding fresh fruits, vegetables and meats for that cost.
